FIRST EDITION of this commentary by Da Monte on Book I, fen IV, of the Canon of Avicenna, a text which Da Monte was particularly keen to promote in the curriculum at Padua. This fen is on general therapeutics. Da Monte was eager to see medical education properly organised and the choice of Avicenna as a core text is perhaps related to the revival of the ancient fivefold division of medicine into physiology, pathology, semiotics, hygiene, and therapy rather than the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century scheme of theoria and practica.
