Antoine Clot's work is a survey of modern Egypt and Egyptian life and manners with a great deal of documentation. Essentially, it is a work of propaganda and an apologia for Mehmet Ali of Egypt, whom Clot greatly admired. Some of the chapters are written by other authors; of particular interest is the one on Islamic art by Pascal Coste, which is one of the earliest treatments of this subject. Clot wrote several other works of a purely medical nature and his memoirs. (Blackmer, 370) Foxing (spotting and browning) is present throughout.
