Cyril Elgood (1893-1970) served as physician to the British Embassy in Tehran, and was a keen student of the language, culture and history of Iran. He begins this short work by reviewing three major accounts of medical history written during the Safavid period (1502-1722): The Mirror of Health of Ghiyas ibn Mohamed al-Ispahani, The Quintessence of Experience of Baha'-ul-Douleh, and The Treasury of Perfection (or of Surgery) of Hakim Mohamed. Having provided some historical background about the Safavid dynasty, the work then turns to medical education, anatomy and various surgical techniques, about which some considerable detail is supplied.
