A speech delivered to the consistory by Anton Florian, Count of Lichtenstein, the Imperial Ambassador to the Vatican, on 12 February 1691, exhorting the cardinals to elect a successor to Pope Alexander VIII, who had died on 1 February, ‘cum hostis Christiani nominis Turca... totis viribus aggreditur, extremum excidium minatur’. After a lengthy struggle between the French and the Habsburg factions, Cardinal Pignatelli was eventually elected as Pope Innocent XII on 12 July 1691.
